Infrared thermography is a technique for visualising the heat given off by all objects. Part of the heat lost by an object is in the form of long-wavelength or 'thermal' infrared light. Invisible to human eyes, this thermal radiation may be detected by cameras fitted with special electronic chips. The signals are converted into black and white images, typically with higher temperatures as bright areas. The images are often colour-coded to enhance the information. Thermography has an astounding range of applications from medical diagnosis and search and rescue operations, to energy audits of buildings and law enforcement.
