NEWS RELEASE 19 Oct 2001

Calculator takes away the drudge of estimating image file sizes

A neat, new tool to help designers and editors work out the file size needed to ensure good print reproduction of digital images has been produced by the Science Photo Library.

Designed to be quick and easy to use, the calculator shows at a glance the file sizes required for printing at different sizes.

"We know that designers and production editors have to work out the file sizes each time and we came up with the idea of producing an easy to use device to help them," says Maria Storey, Science Photo Library marketing and communications director. "We hope the calculator will be useful to anyone who handles digital images destined for print."

Once users know the lpi/dpi being used for printing - commonly 300dpi for many magazines and brochures - the calculator can be turned to correspond with the print size, from A7 to A3, and the file size in MB can be read off.

There is also a digital version of the calculator, which can be found on the home page of www.sciencephoto.com. You simply enter the length and width of the size you wish to print the image at, enter the lpi/dpi you will be printing at, and the calculator automatically gives you the digital file size you will need. This tool can either be used online, or downloaded onto your computer. Macromedia Flash 5 is needed to view the calculator.

A free copy of the digital image file size calculator can be obtained from Maria Storey, Marketing & Communications Director, Science Photo Library, 327-329 Harrow Road, London W9 3RB Tel: 020 7432 1100 Fax: 020 7286 8668 maria.storey@sciencephoto.com
